"Green Building" is the practice of creating healthier, more resource-efficient models of construction, renovation, operation, maintenance, and demolition. Buildings and development have extensive effects on human health, natural resource use, and environmental quality. Buildings may also produce widespread air and water pollution, stormwater runoff, waste, and unhealthy indoor environments. Green building aims to reduce those impacts and transform buildings into a sustainable part of the landscape.
ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices.
Results are already adding up. Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved enough energy in 2009 alone to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 30 million cars — all while saving nearly $17 billion on their utility bills.
The Commercial Building Initiative (CBI) aims to significantly improve the energy efficiency of new and existing commercial buildings. CBI also engages commercial building owners and operators from a variety of industry sectors to help demonstrate, monitor, and move these technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace.
